Color Guide

Agouti Group

Variations of "wild colored" rabbits: hair shafts exhibit three or more bands of pigment. The eye circles, belly, under jaw, and underside of tail are cream or off-white. Showable colors include castor, amber, opal, lynx, chinchilla (Black, blue, chocolate, lilac), sable chinchilla, and smoke pearl chinchilla. 

Self Group

Self varieties exhibit the same coloration over the entire body and do not have cream or white eye circles, belly, under jaw, or underside of tail. Showable varieties include black, blue, chocolate, lilac, ruby-eyed white, and blue-eyed white. 

Shaded Group

Shaded varieties show a gradual transition from the base color on the body to darker coloration on the points like a Siamese cat. Showable varieties include tortoiseshell (black, blue, chocolate, lilac), sable point (black, blue, chocolate, lilac), seal, sable, and smoke pearl. 

Non-Extension Group

Non-extension varieties are cream, orange, or red across the body. The eye circles, belly, under jaw, and underside of tail are off-white or cream. Varieties in this group include red, orange, fawn with brown eyes, and cream with blue-gray eyes.  

Additional Solid Varieties

Tan Group includes otter varieties (black, blue, chocolate, and lilac), rabbits with self-colored bodies and orange or fawn eye circles, belly, under jaw, and underside of tail. Ticked Group includes steel, frosted pearl, and silver fox varieties featuring the same coloration over the majority of the body with contrasting guard hairs. Pointed White, or himayalan, varieties are white with red eyes and dark points in black, blue, chocolate, or lilac. Most of these colors are rare in Velveteen Lops.

Broken Group

Brokens consist of any showable color in conjunction with white spots, either with spotted or blanket patterning. Brokens also include tricolors in black/orange, blue/fawn, chocolate/orange, and lilac/fawn combinations. Broken and tricolor rabbits are temporarily showable while the Velveteen Lop breed is working toward recognition. They may compete for Best of Variety but should not be considered for Best of Breed placement. Broken and tricolor will require variety Certificates of Development once the breed is recognized. 

Non-Showable Varieties

Velveteen Lops also come in many non-showable varieties, either existing as projects in early development or produced as recessives from showable parents. Some non-showable varieties are useful in show lineages. This is just a small sample of the non-showable varieties one may see in the breed.
